Rewind: 1968

Rewind: 1968 is a requiem for the possible, a ceremonial remembrance in honor of what could have been. The second iteration of a series of creative works exploring the history and consequences of the North Carolina Eugenics program by Alexandra Joye Warren (Librettist) and Composers Suzanne Polak and Solomon Caldwell.

Rewind:1968 brings to life the story of a young couple in the late sixties Piedmont Triad and the mysterious character who brings the pair together in the hope of fulfillment of a mission of intergalactic importance. Marrying themes of Afro-Futurism, Southern Blues traditions, historic narrative, and contemporary choreography, this production workshops the story of what will later become a full-scale two act opera by sharing a sample of the music and lyrics.

Background and Historical Research

Set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Counterculture, Rewind: 1968 tackles an often overlooked historical darkpoint in an otherwise much studied and discussed era of modern America.

The concept or term eugenics refers to the intentional and selective breeding of humans and animals to rid the population of characteristics deemed unfit by those administering this practice. The practice was used in an effort to eliminate the passing down of traits such as promiscuity and criminality, but was also used to deter drains on future government resources by targeting people with disabilities, some of which didn’t even have their diagnostic names yet, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder.

North Carolina stands out in the history of eugenics. While most states after WWII eliminated their forced sterilization programs, North Carolina is one of a handful that ramped up sterilizations into the midcentury. And where other states left the referral process to doctors working in prisons and mental hospitals, only North Carolina gave that power to social workers. In the late 1940s, the Department of Public Welfare began to promote increased sterilizations as one of several solutions to poverty and illegitimacy.

Between 1929 and 1974, nearly 7,600 documented males and females were sterilized by choice, force or coercion under the authority of a 1929 sterilization law and the creation of the N.C. Eugenics Board program in 1933. The youngest victims were ten (10) years of age. Tate’s story in Rewind: 1968 is inspired by the story of young boys at Stonewall Jackson Reform School  who were forcibly sterilized as one of many cruel measures enacted to curb ‘undesirable’ traits and prevent the passing down of those traits along to future children, who would have been deemed - even before birth - as burdens on the State’s resources.
